Moderate Priority

Your genetic score is associated with mildly elevated Lp(a) levels.

What is lipoprotein (a), and why does it matter?

Lipoproteins are particles that transport cholesterol in the bloodstream. You've probably heard of LDL — the "pro-atherogenic" particles that penetrate artery linings, deposit cholesterol and form fatty plaques. This process, atherosclerosis, is why high LDL raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke.

A lesser-known particle that is even more pro-atherogenic than LDL is lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a) — estimated to be around 6× more pro-atherogenic per particle, and an established risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Lp(a) levels can vary up to 1,000-fold between individuals, and 75–95% of that variance is genetic. This trait shows whether you carry gene variants that elevate your Lp(a) and increase your cardiovascular risk.

3 The science, explained
Lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), is a particle that transports cholesterol in the bloodstream. Cholesterol in Lp(a) particles is more likely to be deposited in plaques in the lining of arteries — a process known as atherosclerosis.
High Lp(a) levels therefore increase your risk of diseases linked to atherosclerosis, such as angina, heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease — known collectively as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).
Rare variants of the LPA, PLG and LPAL2 genes can increase the levels of Lp(a) circulating in your bloodstream, putting carriers at greater risk of developing ASCVD.

Lp(a) is a particle that transports cholesterol, which is more likely to be deposited in plaques in the lining of arteries.
High Lp(a) raises your risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease — angina, heart attack and stroke.
