“It helped me connect a lot of dots around training, recovery, and long-term health. Instead of guessing, I now feel I have a clearer idea of what’s actually worth focusing on.”
Why Adam Took A FitnessGenes DNA Test
After suffering a tendon rupture, Adam started questioning whether there could be a genetic component to injury risk and recovery. At the same time, he had already become interested in genetics from a performance perspective, having seen other bodybuilders use similar testing to better understand how their bodies respond to training.
Beyond fitness, Adam had also started thinking more seriously about long-term health and longevity. Having recently turned 40 and with a young family, he wanted more clarity around potential health risks, particularly because he has limited knowledge of one side of his family history and had seen cardiovascular and osteoporosis-related complications affect his mother.
What He Was Hoping To Achieve
Adam wanted practical guidance in three key areas:
- Whether his genetics highlighted any meaningful health risks, particularly around cardiovascular health, cognitive health, or ageing-related concerns
- Whether his training style actually matched his genetic profile, especially around muscle fibre type, recovery, and bodybuilding performance
- Which nutrition and supplementation strategies were most worth prioritising for both performance and long-term health
He was not looking for abstract science or generic advice. He wanted something he could realistically apply to training, recovery, blood testing, supplementation, and day-to-day decision making.
What He Got From The Test
The test gave Adam insight into both health and performance.
On the health side, the most important finding for him was the presence of genetic markers suggesting greater attention should be paid to cardiovascular health, particularly around lipoprotein(a). This stood out as the clearest area to investigate further through follow-up blood testing. The test also highlighted genetic markers associated with tendon and ligament injury susceptibility, alongside markers linked to how the body responds to oxidative stress and recovery.
Rather than treating the results as standalone conclusions, Adam viewed them as useful indicators to combine with lifestyle, training history, and future blood work.
On the performance side, the results suggested he may respond better to a higher-volume, higher-rep, shorter-rest training style, alongside strong lactate clearance and a more endurance-leaning profile.
That was particularly meaningful because it contrasted with the heavier, lower-rep training culture he had followed for years within bodybuilding. Adam said the results helped explain why certain approaches had always felt more natural and effective for him than others, giving him more confidence to adapt his training in a way that better suited his body and recovery profile.
He also found it valuable that several findings aligned with observations he had already made through experience, including higher carbohydrate intake, recovery requirements, and certain supplement strategies.
What He Plans To Implement
Adam plans to implement the findings gradually and strategically rather than changing everything at once.
His planned next steps include:
- Getting blood tests focused on lipoprotein-related cardiovascular markers
- Reviewing supplementation based on both blood work and the priority areas highlighted in the report
- Continuing key supplements already aligned with his profile, including vitamin D, vitamin B complex, omega-3s, and collagen with vitamin C
- Keeping omega-3 intake more consistent
- Adapting future training towards higher reps and programming better aligned with his profile once fully recovered
- Phasing in additional recommendations over the next three to six months based on follow-up markers, priorities, and budget
For Adam, the biggest value was not being told to completely overhaul everything overnight, but having a clearer sense of where to focus first and what was most relevant to his body and long-term goals.
