What it measures

The BalanceTest measures 11 fatty acids

Together, these 11 fatty acids make up around 98% of all the fatty acids in your blood, spanning saturated, monounsaturated (omega-9) and polyunsaturated (omega-6 and omega-3) fats. From this profile the test calculates recognised indicators including your omega-6 to omega-3 balance and Omega-3 Index. Each result comes with target reference values, so you can see where you stand today and track your progress over time.

Frequently asked questions

The test analyses 11 fatty acids in your blood, including your omega-6 to omega-3 balance, your Omega-3 (EPA + DHA) Index, and related markers of fatty acid status. Together these show whether your diet is providing the essential fats your body needs.

The FitnessGenes DNA analysis and the Omega BalanceTest answer different questions. Your FitnessGenes DNA results tell you how efficiently you convert and retain these fats, and therefore how much you're likely to need, and in what form. The Omega BalanceTest tells you where you've actually ended up, which depends on your diet as much as your genes. Together they give you both the number and the reason for it.

Across the whole FitnessGenes membership, ensuring you consume enough omega-3 is the most frequent recommendation we make to our members to support future health and longevity. It's also one of the few nutritional recommendations you can actually measure. Understanding your current Omega-3 Index and omega-6:3 ratio tells you whether you're getting enough of this critical nutrient, points you towards the right interventions, and shows you whether what you've changed is working.

The Omega BalanceTest is made by Zinzino, and FitnessGenes is an official Zinzino Independent Partner. We dispatch your kit from our UK office, your sample is analysed by Vitas, an independent GMP-certified laboratory, and your results are delivered anonymously through zinzinotest.com (not via your FitnessGenes account). We selected Zinzino after reviewing the omega-3 home tests available, and chose them on the quality of their analysis and reporting.

No. It's a nutritional measurement to help you make better-informed decisions about your diet. It isn't a diagnostic test and it isn't a substitute for advice from your doctor.

The test uses a small single-use lancet to take a few drops of blood from your fingertip - a brief pinprick, over in seconds. Full instructions are included in the kit.

Your sample is analysed by Vitas, an independent GMP-certified laboratory. Register your unique test code at zinzinotest.com and your results appear there, typically 10-20 days after your sample reaches the lab. At present, your BalanceTest results will not be viewable within your FitnessGenes account.

No. Your dried blood spot card goes directly to the laboratory in the pre-addressed envelope provided in your kit. Return postage is not included and is at your own cost. We would recommend sending it via a tracked service.

If your sample is lost en route to the lab, Zinzino will provide a replacement at no additional cost. You will need to have registered the unique test code and taken a picture of the test ID card for Zinzino to validate that your sample has not been received by the lab.

You can retake the Omega BalanceTest after around 120 days to assess the impact of any dietary changes. Red blood cells live roughly four months, so your result reflects a season of your diet rather than last week's meals, and a significant change needs about that long to show up properly.

Your FitnessGenes DNA analysis only needs to be done once. Your genetics don't change, so there's no need to retest.
